Increasing Breastmilk: Lactation Cookies & Shatavari

How I Increase My Breastmilk?

During the 2nd night in hospital, my breasts were so engorged. On the 3rd day, the engorgement was killing me, so i tried to pump (I didnt know about the "pump as soon as possible after delivery", I was only aware about latching, which i couldn't because my baby was in NICU). So i only tried to pump on the 3rd day. My first pump was 80ml, both breasts. After that, every 3-4 hours, it's about 30-50ml. I then became lazy on pumping, which in turn, decreased my milk supply. When i got home, my milk supply was low, so i started eating my homemade lactation cookies as well as a supplement called Shatavari. I continue taking them every day, along with pumping every 3-4 hours. After 1 month, this is an example of my milk supply...

I somehow think the lactation cookies and/or the Shatavari works. So i would love to share with interested mummies out there.

Lactation Cookies
Ingredients
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups unbleached organic all-purpose flour
5 tablespoons brewer's yeast
3 tablespoons ground flaxseed
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
12 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 tablespoons unrefined virgin coconut oil
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped almonds

Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, yeast, flaxseeds, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
3. In the bowl of an electric mixer or with a hand mixer, cream together the butter and coconut oil until creamy. Add the sugar and continue to beat 5 minutes, until fluffy.
4. Add the eggs one at a time and beat until combined. Add in the vanilla.
5. Gradually add in the dry ingredients, beating on low speed until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and almonds until combined.

6. Using a mini ice cream scoop or 1 tablespoon measure, scoop the dough onto a silpat-lined baking sheet.

7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown.

tada~! Your homemade lactation cookies!

Store them in air-tight containers.

Shatavari
This is the supplement i took.

i bought it online from iHerb. Here's the link.
Instead of taking 1 capsule every morning and night, i doubled it. I was taking 2 capsules in the morning and 2 capsules at night.

Remember, if you want to increase your milk supply, you have to empty your breasts often. Meaning, after breastfeeding (direct latching) your baby, pump out the remaining milk and store. "The more you pump, the more milk you'll have!"

I hope these information helps!

Stopping Lactation: Dostinex

Yes. I decided to give up breastfeeding.   Because it's eating away my sleep and health, mentally and physically.  People always say, " breastfeeding is the best for your child and try to breastfeed as long as possible, at least 6 months ". Well, it's easier said than done . Now that I've experienced breastfeeding, I'd really admire those mums who actually breastfed for months or years. It's so so so tough and tiring, I swear. For those who don't understand and never knew what's the life of a breastfeeding mom...  Here's an example (newborn).  1am baby sleep. Mummy sleep.  3am baby cry. feeding time  (Latch: 30-40 mins. Or Bottle: 5 mins prepare and warm milk, feed 20-30 mins.) 3.35am burp baby. 3.40am   change baby diaper. 3.45am put baby to sleep 3.50am pump out (remaining) breast milk. 4.20am done pump. Prepare storage. 4.25am store breast milk in fridge. Wash up breast pump and sterilize. 4.35am Sleep....

The Hospital Bag Checklist for delivering in Singapore When should you pack your maternity hospital bag? Try to pack at least 3 weeks before your due date, as it's better to be ready-to-go instead of panicking when the water bag breaks unexpectedly or if the painful contractions finally visits you and by then you won't be able to think properly of what to bring to hospital.  What to pack in your hospital bag? Well, it depends on what amenities and items are already included in your hospital maternity package though. I will be delivering at Mount Alvernia Hospital , and these are the stuffs that's included in the maternity package...
