Breast milk is the best for babies. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding.
Although breastfeeding is best for your baby at this time but if this is not possible, quality infant formula is the next best alternative.
Here I'm gonna share which formula my baby tried, at which age, and why i switched brand.
Nestle NAN Optipro HA Stage 1 (3 to 10 weeks)
Baby's poop has been dark green while drinking NAN optipro. PD said its normal and dark green poop is due to the iron-fortified formula. Fyi, the fart and poop of NAN-fed babies is SUPER SMELLY. haha.
When I was in Korea, i ran out of milk powder, so i had no choice but to grab one from the supermart in Seoul.
ILDONG FOODIS Premium Goat Milk Stage 1 (week 11)
After trying the Korean goat milk baby formula, i realised her poop has changed from dark green to yellowish brown.
So i thought of continuing with goat milk, and this is one of the brand i find in Singapore.
Karihome Goat Milk Stage 1 (week 12)
After feeding my baby with Karihome goat milk, i decided to change when i realised that there is no DHA and ARA in the content. However, there's a-linolenic acid (omega 3) and linoleic acid (omega 6), conjugated linoleic acid (omega 6), and oleic acid (omega 9). I enquired Karihome company on this and they told me that only Stage 2 onwards has got DHA in it.
Well, i believe all mothers want the best for their child, so i decided to change to another formula with DHA.
Einmilk Infant Formula Stage 1 (3 months)
A formula Made in Singapore! I gave this new local brand a try on my baby. Few days later, her poop turned dark green again, just like how it was with Nestle NAN Optipro HA. So i decided to try something new.
Nature One Dairy Premium Newborn Stage 1 (3 months 1 week)
I chose this because I see that there's 2 types of omega 3 and 2 types of omega 6, including DHA and ARA. There's also Lutein and Prebiotics. What's more? It's way cheaper too!
After my baby tried this formula, instead of pooping once every 2 days, she now poop everyday! But this didn't last long. A week passed, now she poops every 2 days again. (Not pooping everyday is normal though). But the poop appeared to be hard at the beginning of the poop (maybe about 5cm, dark green), then followed by softer poop (yellowish). I don't consider this as constipation because the hind poop is soft. But baby had to put in effort to push out the poop every session. So i decided to try something new.
Dumex Mamil Gold Stage 1 (4 months 1 week)
Quite many mummies recommended this formula to ease constipation in babies. Guess what? It'd really work for my little one. i no longer hear her "urggghhhhhh", trying to force the poo out. In fact, she poo-ed without me knowing!
Update: She's 6 months now, still drinking Dumex Mamil Gold, it really helped her constipation issue. *Thumbs up*!
